The Lingering Effects of a Car Accident

A car accident happens in the blink of an eye, but the effects can last longer than the broken limbs and open wounds you first see. Not only is it dangerous to be unaware of your lingering symptoms, but it is also important to understand what they mean to you. Knowing the lasting effects of car accidents can benefit you when seeking medical help and keep you informed when you may not know and see the source of your injury.

Chronic Pain

The sudden force of a car accident on the human body often leads to whiplash. When experiencing whiplash, there is a strain on the neck that can spiral into various other health problems. The strain can cause pain in the upper back and shoulders if left untreated. Many victims walk away believing they have been unharmed from a minor accident but can still suffer from whiplash. Since it is not visible and sometimes not felt instantly, many victims of car accidents seek medical help months later, unaware of what triggered their pain.

Headaches

The instant impact caused by a car accident can also cause headaches. This can signify a concussion, and you should seek medical help as soon as possible. Leaving a concussion untreated can result in chronic headaches, memory loss problems, and dizziness. Concussions do linger after a car accident but can heal. A concussion can take anywhere from three weeks to six months to heal properly. In cases of a mild concussion, victims may be unaware they are concussed. If the accident is major, medical professionals will check for a concussion, but if you walk away from a minor incident, concussions are still possible and should be examined by a doctor.

Ringing in Ears

Another effect that can have a lasting impact after a car accident is ringing in the ears also known as tinnitus. Tinnitus can be caused by whiplash, brain injury, or an airbag's loud sound when deployed. While this is a lasting effect of a car accident, it is not permanent, tinnitus usually lasts anywhere from 3 to 12 months.

Limited Mobility

Car accidents are sometimes so severe they can impact a victim's spinal cord. Spinal cord injuries can range from minor tears to complete fractures. The recovery process is often lengthy and requires months of physical therapy. Even after therapy, some victims never gain full recovery.

Numbness

Nerve damage from a car crash is also a result of a spinal cord injury and causes numbness. Victims often describe the feeling of numbness in their limbs as pins and needles. Many victims regain partial feelings but never return to a full feeling in their limbs.
